27th Ophthalmologists Congress : Corrective Eye Problems In The Spotlight

For three days, members of the association are exchanging ideas on how to fight against avoidable blindness in the country.

Statistics indicate that worldwide, there are about 2.3 billion people with refractive errors. In Cameroon, there are no national statistics on the situation of refractive errors. But, hospital-based studies show that most consultations in ophthalmic practice is due to problems linked with vision as many people complain of not seeing clearly. Worst, is the fact that many people do not carry out proper diagnosis in a bid to correct their eye problem. They just buy eye glasses alongside the road and wear. Ophthalmologists say this creates more problems for the eyes because not all eye problems are linked to refractive errors.
It is within this backdrop that the 25th Ophthalmologists Congress began yesterday February 24, 2022 in Yaounde. The congress, holding on the theme “Refractive Errors” was opened by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Public Health, Professor Louis Richard Ndjock. On behalf of the Minister of Public Health, Prof. Louis Richard Ndjock congratulated the learned society which is at its 27th annual congress. He said this was proof of scientific seriousness and conviviality within the society. The Secretary General acknowledged the public health problem created by uncorrected refractive errors and encouraged health personnel to work harder to screen for these disorders. While highlighting government’s efforts in providing training for eye personnel and equipping health care facilities, Prof Ndjock encouraged actors working in the provision of glasses to improve accessibility, especially to vulnerable groups.
