Interview : “The World Of Women Is Evolving, Challenging”

What is your view on the world of a woman today?
The world of women is evolving as compared to the past. It is interesting and challenging at the same time. Women now occupy certain positions which was not very common in the yesteryears. In Cameroon, we now have women as Senior Divisional Officers, pilots, renowned scientists and health practitioners, Director Generals, senior Magistrates and what have you. As a member of the network of female parliamentarians in Cameroon, I am very happy to see the significant increase in women representation. There are close to 60 women as lawmakers at the National Assembly, representing 30 per cent. This is something which is increasing progressively and we hope to see more female representation.
Political parties are increasing their female representation in executive positions. The development goals of Cameroon take into consideration gender equality, which is something very good. Cameroon is trying in the area of promoting the rights of women and girls, but we are asking and hoping for more to be done. We have seen that women are wonderful managers and they excel in their various positions.
At the same time, the world of the woman today is challenging as there still exist some stereotypes. Access to land by women remains a problem and women are not given full confidence. For example, how many women were candidates in the last president elections?
How can the lives/living conditions of women be improved in 2022?
Legal instruments backing the rights of women need to be reinforced. The government and institutions need to do more as concerns women empowerment and their access to certain things. Women should be accorded huge financial assistance for investments. We ...
