Improving Living Conditions / Contribution Of Parliamentarians

Parliamentarians through diverse means contribute to improve the living conditions of the population.

The role of parliamentarians, be they Members of the National Assembly or Senators is to vote laws and oversee government action.  In Cameroon, Members of the National Assembly elected through direct universal suffrage represent the entire nation in the Lower House of Parliament while Senators elected through indirect suffrage for now by municipal councillors represent Regional and Local Authorities.
The constitutional role of parliamentarians is clear but the population expect much from them in terms of improvement of their living conditions and ensuring development in general. Indeed, in most localities the population believe that the Members of the National Assembly and Senators have the solutions to their teething everyday problems.  Cases of sickness, deaths, provisions of school needs and basic necessities are taken to these representatives of the people for solutions.
From ever indication, parliamentarians stand a better chance to contribute to development thereby improving the living conditions of the population. Each of them in every legislative year is allocated micro- project grants to solve some of the development needs of their constituents. Some of them have set up offices in their constituencies with people recruited to liaise with the population to know their needs in order to set up priorities on how to tackle them.
