The world turns aside to let a people pass who know where they are going. Decidedly, the Cameroon of the New Deal, after building strong foundations for unity and cohesion, enhancing democracy and economic prosperity, is now re-enforcing pillars of linguistic and cultural diversity. A decree signed by the Head of State, President Paul Biya yesterday, creates a National Commission for the promotion of Bilingualism and Multiculturalism. Placed directly under the authority of the Head of State, the Commission is charged with the promotion of bilingualism and multiculturalism. Besides ensuring the follow up of constitutional dispositions making English and French the two official languages of equal value, the Commission will receive all complains denouncing discrimination based on non-respect of constitutional dispositions related to bilingualism or multiculturalism. Other attributes of the new Commission include the vulgarization of rules on bilingualism and multiculturalism. The carrying out of studies or investigations geared towards proposing measures to re-enforce the bilingual and multicultural character of Cameroon also fall within its prerogatives.
By words and deed, President Paul Biya has once more shown that the care of human life and happiness is the first and only legitimate object of good government. As a political philosophy, the New Deal eulogizes the fruits of peace and nationhood, re-enforcing the tenets of a collective heritage, consistently strengthening the national resolve, to stay the course, hold the fort to the advantage of future generations. The bottom line is that our Head of State has a listening ear, like the head of family he takes into consideration the concerns of all his children. President Paul Biya has shown in many instances that he will always act in the supreme interest of the Country, he is on oath to protect and defend its cohesion and constitution. He will listen, reflect and decide. The protection of the common good and the preservation of the nation's oft-quoted sobriquet of "island of peace and stability" remain his concerns. The creation of the National Commission of Bilingualism and Multiculturalism is just one in a series of actions that remain part of the political philosophy of the Head of State, to continuously build endearing pillars of national cohesion.
