“We Coach And Mentor Children”

Pr. Judith Torimiro, Vice President of Higher Women Consortium, Head of Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.

Your association has decided to target young pupils in the promotion of science subjects. What motivated such a move?
The world is based is on science. Knowledge is based on science. Science is the study of nature and the social environment. That is how we apply what we know, to understand all that which happens around us, what is going on today and what will happen tomorrow. And therefore, it is important to look at the children of today, taking a big picture of when we were at this age. Most of us never had the opportunity to understand sciences. But if someone is pushed, mentored and given the right orientation, I think someone can become a better scientist with less effort. Therefore, we as women in health science of Higher Consortium, thought it very important to start to talk to the young people, so that they can fit into the world’s competition.  Today, we know the common acronym; STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). But recently, we have coined another, SEM which is Science, Engineering and Medicine. If girls see women as female professors or engineers, they get excited. So, that is one of the reasons we felt it was important to talk to children at this age and see how we build the scientific mass of Cameroon. Science brings development. Science deals with understanding nature. Therefore, it can be thought at home and in school. In school, it is methodological and organised. But at home, as we spent time with children, we have to observe them to know that the child who is very curious, patient or hardworking. Thereafter, begin to coach that child towards maybe in case science. Or to mentor the child into a profession or a career of science. In so doing, I think from the family point...
