Education of Children With Disabilities : National Awareness Campaign Ongoing

The operation “We Ring the Bell” was launched by the Minister of Social Affairs, yesterday April 27, in Yaounde.

Some dignitaries in Yaounde alongside children with disabilities have whistled and sounded the trumpets in the “We Ring The Bell” campaign which seeks to sensitises families and communities on the education of children with disabilities. The nationwide awareness campaign was launched by the Minister of Social Affairs, Pauline Irene Nguene in collaboration with the Ministries of Basic and Secondary Education as well as the Cameroon Baptist Convention Health Services (CBCHS). 
Placed under the theme, “Leave No Child with Disability Behind in Education” Minister Pauline Irene Nguene said the second edition of the “We Ring The Bell” campaign seeks to sensitise the pubic on the education of children with disabilities in order to achieve the fourth goal of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which calls on member States to promote inclusive and equality education for all learners. According to the World Disability Statistics, Pauline Irene Nguene said, 90 per cent of children with disabilities worldwide are out of school. The majority of these children live in the poorest regions of Africa, Asia and Latin America. She said children with disabilities face rejection from their own families and communities, due to their disabilities. As a result, a certain laxity sets in regarding the possibility of sending them to school, as this creates doubts about their ability to thrive in school.
