South West: Smith Molua Becke Couple 61 Years In Marriage

They were honoured in Buea on the International Women’s Day as a model to all those in matrimony.

A love tale that started in an English Choir of the Ebenezer Baptist Mission Church in Great Soppo in 1959 materialised in a marriage in 1961. The couple were on March 8, 2022, during the International Women’s Day celebration at Bongo Square in Buea honoured by Bernard Okalia Bilai, South West Governor, as exemplary couple to have spent 61 years in marriage.

The couple are Papa Smith Molua Efufa Becke and Mama Rebecca Mojoko Becke. In that choir, Papa Smith Molua hummed the bass while Mama Rebecca resonated the treble. In the 1950’s the Christian Church published pamphlets on how to choose a wife. Papa Smith Molua explained that he had several failed attempts to find the type of woman he desired.  But his younger sister questioned why he was going round looking for a wife when her friend and classmate (Rebecca Mojoko) is a wife material. Steadily, things matured and resulted into marriage in 1961.

For 61 years, Mama Rebecca said marriage has not been easy. But with perseverance and bearing each other their love candle has been burning very bright till press time on April 21, 2022 at 2 pm. Their secret is in talking out their differences and forgiving wholeheartedly. Their children cemented their love...
