Fight Against Hate Speech : National Coalition Platform Launched

The National Commission for the Promotion of Bilingualism and Multiculturalism signed a Memorandum of Understanding with 14 civil society organisations on May 24, 2022.

A national coalition platform on the fight against hate speech and xenophobia in Cameroon has been launched between the National Commission for the Promotion of Bilingualism and Multiculturalism and some civil society organisations from all the ten regions of the country. The Commission’s Chairperson, Peter Mafany Musonge presided at the partnership event on May 24, 2022 which aims at fighting a common enemy threatening the foundations of national unity. As per the agreement, the 14 civil society organisations will in their respective regions and organisations preach love and individual respect in the use of words. 
In his opening remark, the Commission’s Chairperson said when the President of the Republic instructed the Commission to carry out a new communication campaign against hate speech and xenophobia in Cameroon, one of the strategies adopted by the Commission to implement the said prescription was to form a collaborative platform with civil society organisations to take the fight to the remotest corners of the country. “The choice of working with you was not fortuitous. We know that, in your day-to-day activities, you deal directly with the target populations, you know them, you speak their language and they trust you. That is why we are relying on this position of proximity that you occupy, to ensure that every Cameroonian gets the message and joins the fight because the beauty and wealth of our diversity should not be sacrificed on the altar of hate speech and xenophobia,” Peter Mafany Musonge explained.
