Morocco : AU Chairperson Calls For Investigation

This follows the death of at least 23 migrants on Friday while trying to cross into Spain.

African Union Commission Chairperson (AUC), Moussa Faki Mahamat has called for an “immediate investigation” after the death of dozens of migrants trying to cross from Morocco into the Spanish town of Melilla. “I express my deep shock and concern at the violent and degrading treatment of African migrants attempting to cross an international border from Morocco into Spain, with the ensuing violence leading to the death of at least 23 people and many injuries,” Mahamat said on Twitter late Sunday. The AU Chairperson who frowned at the inhumane treatment meted on the migrants reminded all countries of their obligations under international law to treat all migrants with dignity and to prioritise their safety and human rights, while refraining from the use of excessive force.
The AU Chair’s call comes on the heels of similar calls from the Moroccan Association for Human Rights (AMDH). In a series of tweets on Saturday, AMDH called for a “comprehensive, quick and serious” investigation into Friday’s events and published videos of the aftermath of the attempted mass crossing. The videos showed what appear to be dead bodies and severely injured people strewn across the ground without receiving medical attention some with their hands tied behind their backs. Amnesty International as well as the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR), have also weighed in.
