64th World Leprosy Day:CERAC Restores Dignity Of Victims

The charitable association of Cameroon’s First Lady yesterday communed with leprosy patients in Yaounde

The Circle of Friends of Cameroon (CERAC) has joined people around the world to observe World Leprosy Day. This yearly rendezvous was respected yesterday January 29, 2017 at the Former Leprosy Jamot Centre in Yaounde, when a delegation of Cameroon’s First Lady charitable association headed by Anne Ndjodo, Vice President of CERAC, communed with former and current leprosy  patients at the home. It was a unique moment for the association’s members to pray for leprosy victims as well as show solidarity and love to this group of people who are sometimes abandoned by their families and communities. Special gifts from the Founding President of CERAC, Mrs Chantal Biya were handed over to the leprosy victims.
Highlighting the theme of the day:  “It is not because you do not have leprosy, that the disease does not exist”, the representative of the Minister of Public Health, Dr Marlise Loudang, lamented that many people are ignorant about the disease and do not know what to do when they see a scar on any part of their body. She explained measures taken by the government to curb the disease and better care for those already affected. As such, the government has created some 10 leprosy homes in all the health districts in the country. 70 per cent of 350 new cases of leprosy treated in the country are from these homes. Dr Marlise Loudang said the government is now focused on the importance of sensitising the population on the disease. This is why she used the occasion to laud the efforts of Mrs Chantal Biya and CERAC for their tireless efforts to raise awareness about the leprosy disease.
