SOPECAM: Excellence Strategies Identified

A workshop to better execute the 2017 plan of action of the corporation ended over the weekend in Yaounde

Since presidential decree n° 2016/216 of 28 April 2016 transforming the Cameroon News and Publishing Corporation, SOPECAM, in the French language, into a Public Company and another decree n° 2016/217 of 28 April 2016 approving new statute for SOPECAM, stakes and challenges are high for the management of the corporation.
To meet up with the challenges of its new statute, the administration of SOPECAM organised a two-day workshop with central and external services of the corporation to underline the company’s roadmap which focuses on excellence at all levels. This requires a new orientation for the workers. For two days, directors of different departments and SOPECAM’s agency heads from all the regions of the country made a critical appraisal of the happenings and how the company can move ahead while being financially autonomous to carry out its activities as well as investment projects.
While closing the workshop, the Deputy General Manager of SOPECAM, Dr. Shey Peter Mabu reiterated that workers need to align to the new status of the company which is aimed at making profit. Henceforth, the productions of the corporation (Cameroon Tribune, Nyanga, Weekend and the yet-to-be flagged off magazine) will need to improve their content to make them attractive and sellable. Workers, he noted, are required to change their attitude towards work, be more disciplined with an objective to overcome challenges and raise money for the company.
In a bid to meet up with the company’s gaols, the department of Cameroon Tribune will need to attain its new-look project for the newspaper which is that of making its content interesting while putting in place ICTs systems to control the flow of information between the various editorial services. An E-commerce website where people will easily buy SOPECAM products such as current or old newspapers as well as books published by the enterprise will also be created. SOPECAM Marketing and Communication (SMC) will also need to improve its methods of selling the company’s products. The production department will also have to work towards installing the second part of the new printing press. The advertising sector amongst other things will have to sort out ways of selling more colourful pages in Cameroon Tribune.

Director of the Magazine Department of Sopecam

“The workshop has enabled me to have a practical look at the 2017 plan of action of the corporation. The meeting has enabled me to understand the difficulties of Sopecam regional heads when they need to make reports on happenings in the various hinterlands in the country. Other concerns about reports on Tribune des Regions were raised and my department is going to look into that. My collaborators now know the objectives of the company for 2017 and I have discussed with them on how they can improve on the quality of their work and give it a regional character by not concentrating only on particular divisions in the region.”
