Fight Against Corruption : Youth Empowered On Citizen Participation
A capacity building workshop was recently organised in Yaounde under the theme, “Promoting Transparency, Accountability and Ethics in Public Institutions in Cameroon.”
As a contribution to the fight against corruption in Cameroon, two non-governmental organisation; Actions for Development and Empowerment (ADE) in synergy with Youth for a Better Cameroon (YOBCA) organised a capacity building workshop that targets youths on the theme, “Promoting Transparency, Accountability and Ethics in Public Institutions in Cameroon.” The objective of the training which took place in Yaounde on July 29, 2022 was to increase youth awareness on corruption issues, generate community responsibility and encourage actions on preventing corruption. The instructors consisted of experienced legal and institutional personal in the field of anti-corruption and transparency such as Micheal Tchenga, Cleantine Asongwe and Gerald Afandani, all promoters of the concept. This project is part of the Community Action Plan (CAP) implemented by Cleatine Asongwe, Community Solutions 2021 Alumni from Cameroon.
Besides identifying the causes of corruption and some commonly used coded words that breed the phenomenon in the society, the youths were urged to be whistle blowers for a corrupt-free nation, as a springboard to development. National and international mechanisms put in place by the government such as the National Anti-Corruption Commission (CONAC), the Supreme State Audit Office (CONSUPE), Parliament, as well as United Nations and African Union Conventions in the fight against the societal ill were appreciated. The youths were also urged to make use of the toll-free number to denounce acts of corruption.
