CAR : Constitution Constitutional Court To Decide On Changes

The nine-man panel of judges now has up to September 30, 2022 to endorse or reject the amendment proposal.

The Constitutional Court in the Central Africa Republic is expected to issue a much-awaited decision on whether the country’s constitution should be amended as requested by the ruling United Hearts Movement (MCU) or not. The verdict, to be made public by the end of the month comes on the heels of a complaint filed by the opposition platform, Republican Bloc for the Defense of the Constitution (BRDC), against the presidential decree creating a committee to draft a new constitution for the country. The decree states that, the constitutional draft committee made up of 56 members has the responsibility to rewrite a new draft constitution and hand it over to the President of the Republic who will then fix a date for a constitutional referendum.
But the opposition platform is saying no to any modification of the constitution. According to the opposition, the sole aim of the ruling party is to maintain President Touadera in power and not for the interest of the people. The current constitution prohibits the Head of State Faustin Archange Touadera from running for a third term. He was elected in 2016, re-elected in 2020 and the next presidential election has been slated for 2025. But his MCU supporters say any constitution drafted by human beings can be improved upon when necessary.
