Interview : “Stop the Land-grabbing Syndrome”

Solo Njie Endeley, resident of Buea and president of the Bakweri Youth Association (BAYA).

What is your appreciation of the development pace in Buea?
“The administrators of Buea are making a lot of effort to ensure that Buea is an emergent city in Cameroon. So far, there have been great infrastructural developments like if you go down to Molyko, the stretch of road from Lycee Molyko, through Government Technical High School to the Chief Street down to Malingo street and other roads leading to Muea have been tarred to reduce interurban traffic jam.

As a youth leader, what do you think is lacking in the progress of Buea? Could you highlight some of the activities the BAYA has engaged to foster the development of Buea?
A great majority of the youths in Buea are unemployed. This makes them not add value or feel the relevance of many activities going on in Buea. They have no motivating factor to boost their morale and interest. Our paramount objective is to unite the Bakweri youths and the Bakweri people at large. This is done mainly through cultural activities. We have devised strategies to fight acculturation like teaching youths the Mokpe language and tradition. We believe that the identity of a man is his language. Currently, our language is one of the almost extinct languages amongst the youth’s folk. Our culture is gradually being lost, as such; BAYA has made it her incumbent duty to rejuvenate passion for cultural dances like the Malley, Chacha, Lingombi dance, and many other traditional practices. With these, we have resolved to improve our cultural identity through an effective Mokpe online and offline presence. This to us is a major step to development because we believe that once a person can identify himself to a community or tribe and can name it, he can go the extra mile to foster development in all ramifications.

Given the rising population of Buea, what do you think about the traffic flow?
With the current traffic, leaving Buea Town to Molyko is as tedious as climbing the Mountai...
