Fallen Military Heroes: Emotional Farewell

With gloomy faces, Cameroonians joined President Paul Biya Friday at the Military Headquarters Brigade in Yaounde to honour victims of the 22 January Bogo helicopter crash.

As the dust settles on the burial this weekend of four military officers who perished on January 22 in a helicopter crash in Bogo, Far North Region, Cameroonians have shown grief for the loss but at the same time gratitude for what the men lived and died for. They turned out en masse at the Military Headquarters Brigade in Yaounde on Friday February 3, 2017 to accompany the Head of State; Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, President Paul Biya to bid farewell to the departed military heroes.
The hugely-attended tribute ceremony for the military officers was, to say the least, deeply emotional. Very few could hold back their tears especially when the caskets bearing Major General Kodji Jacob, Brigadier General Nkameni Alphonse, and Flight Lieutenants (Captains) Souloukna Ngrassou Basile and Chinda Mu Tankam Brice were brought into the ceremonial ground. Looking at the families the fallen heroes left behind and coupled with the country’s defence and security situation which they championed with excellence, mourners were unanimous that the country has lost men of valour. They died at the prime of their careers when the nation needed them most. The commitment with which they carried out their jobs made their death more saddening.
It is this commitment President Paul saluted in his emotion-packed speech that however comforted mourners. The Commander-in-Chief described the demise of the four officers as cruel and irreparable loss for the country. He said the military officers gave a good response to the Boko Haram insurgency thanks to which suicide bombings and hostage takings reduced significantly.
