Groupe A : Senegal Progress To Knockout Stages

A 2-1nil victory over Ecuador last night booked the Teranga Lions’ ticket into the round of 16, becoming the first African side to progress.


The Teranga Lions have reached the knockout stages of the 2022 FIFA World Cup after edging out Ecuador by two goals to one last night in their last Group A fixture played at the Khalifa International Stadium. A first half penalty from Ismaila Sarr (44) and a volley from Kalidou Koulibaly (70’) either side of Caciedo’s equalizer (68’) sent the Teranga Lions to the knockout stages. In a winner-takes-all game, the two sides gave out little at the back as they remained cautious, waiting for their moment to strike.
That moment did come and it fell for Senegal just on the brink of half time when Ismaila Sarr was brought down inside the penalty area after a clumsy challenge by Ecuadorian defender Hincapie.
The Watford man dusted himself up, kept his cool and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to give Senegal the lead before the break. However, Ecuador fought their way back into the match and levelled things up through Cacaido(68’).
