Ghana-Uruguay : Retribution Time

In a win take all fixture today, the Black Stars have a chance to get back at the Uruguayans for denying them semi-final qualification in 2010.

Twelve years ago, the Black Stars of Ghana were few minutes to doing what no African nation had ever done in the FIFA World Cup by qualifying for the Semi-finals of the 2010 edition in South Africa. Tied at 1-1 with Uruguay in the last minutes of the game, Dominic Adiyiah was at the verge of scoring what may have been the winner only for Luis Suarez to use his hand and punch the ball away. The handball gave Ghana a spot-kick and Suarez was sent out with a red card. Asamoah Gyan missed it and his team finally lost after penalty shoot outs. The journey of the Ghanaians thus ended in the quarterfinals.
As fate would have it, the Black Stars of Ghana have an opportunity to punish Uruguay as they meet again today December 2, 2022 within the framework of their last Group H fixture of the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Qatar. The game is played at Al Janoub Stadium; kick-off 4 p.m. The Black Stars (three points) will be bent on denying Suarez (that is still with the current Uruguay squad) an opportunity to go past the group stage. A win for the Black Stars would send them directly to eighth finals. A draw would be enough depending on Portugal's result against South Korea. Uruguay with just one point must win if they hope to progress.
