Promoting Gender Equality : UN Lauds Cameroon’s Efforts

Prime Minister, Joseph Dion Ngute received the acting West and Central Africa Regional Director of UN Women, Florence Raes, on December 12, 2022.

Various mechanisms put in place by the government of Cameroon under the leadership of President Paul Biya to promote gender equality in the country have been appreciated by the West and Central Africa Regional Director ai of UN Women, Florence Raes. This was during an audience the Prime Minister, Head of Government, Joseph Dion Ngute granted the UN official on December 12, 2022. Both personalities discussed issues of women and girls in Cameroon particularly in the areas of their rights, autonomy and equal access to opportunities. The Minister of Women Empowerment and the Family, Marie-Thérèse Abena Ondoa also participated in exchanges during the audience.
Florence Raes said Cameroon has a strong political will in advancing the rights of women and girls particularly in the areas of education, economic development and combatting gender-based violence. “For us who work in West and Central Africa, the normative framework and other legal provisions adopted by Cameroon as well as efforts of the Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and the Family are actions that should be appreciated. We discussed on possible collaboration in reinforcing efforts of the Cameroonian government and also to share the example of Cameroon with other countries in the region,” Florence Raes stated.
