National Assembly: Youth Push For Improved Agro-Pastoral Sector

The maiden session of youth parliament took place yesterday in Yaounde in prelude to the 2017 edition of the National Youth Day.

The Ngoa-Ekelle Glass House in Yaounde yesterday February 9, 2017 witnessed the first ever session of the Youth Parliament. The 180 young MPs ranging between 20-35 years old, selected from the 58 Divisions of the ten regions of the country converged on the House Chamber of the National Assembly to examine the opportunities and obstacles in the socio-economic and professional insertion of youth in the agro-pastoral sector, in prelude to this year’s National Youth Day on the theme “Youth and the challenges of building an exemplary, indivisible, strong and emerging nation.”
The young parliamentarians deliberated and unanimously adopted ten resolutions which all centred on improving agro-pastoral sector in the country. The resolutions read out in plenary calls amongst other things for the introduction of agriculture and livestock subjects in primary and secondary schools and insert it on the examination programme. They also urged government to implement a technical and financial support procedure for youth agro-pastoral entrepreneurs, adopt measures to give youth access to farm land amongst others in order to improve on the sector and attract youths.
Organised by the Parliamentary Network Experance Jeunesse (REJE) in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Civic Education, different speakers at the inaugural session hailed the initiative, stating that it will pave the way for the necessary institutional dialogue between the youth and public authorities.
