Tiko Airstrip : Assessment For Rehabilitation Begins

Members of the committee to verify and evaluate the Tiko airport land are afield this week to ascertain the facts for rehabilitation works instructed by the Head of State.

Sixteen commissioners representing various Government Ministries and Technical Services under the strict supervision of Fako Divisional Officer, Chaibou, are this week locating, extending and assessing the domain of the Tiko airport for rehabilitation. By the end of their job, they would have effected a conclusive verification, demarcation and valuation to ascertain the space on which to sit the rehabilitation works of the historic airport in Tiko in Fako Division. 
The diligence to this precious airport assignment this time, a one-time aviation pearl to the British administration of the then Southern Cameroon, has certainly been pricked by President Paul Biya’s address to the nation last 31st December, 2023. In speech, the Head of State instructed the rehabilitation of endearing national projects including the Tiko airstrip. Fako Senior Divisional Officer, Chaibou, already led an acquaintance expedition of commission members to the site in Tiko last 11 January, 2023. Accompanying the team, Cameroon Tribune reporters noted indications that the old airport runway spanned one and a half km long. An earlier Commission placed in 2017 had established 45 hectares of land for the Tiko airport. Unfortunately, the airfield had remained underused, overgrown with grass and, most dangerously encroached by individuals who planted permanent and semi-permanent buildings in its surroundings. Some of the structures observed in the surrounding area of the Tiko airport included hotels, business houses, living homes, farms and farm houses erected decades ago.
The Commission members, led by Chaibou, drove round the airport and viewed spots on which to plant boundary beacons. A conceived map of the Tiko Airport was spread out to weigh in the comments of Commissioners.
