Ring Road Project : Women Drilled On Economic Benefits

Women from concerned communities were presented the opportunities by the UN Women and Reach Out Cameroon during a consultation workshop in Bamenda on January 19, 2023.

Government has programmed work to resume on the Bamenda Ring Road Project this financial year with the Kumbo-Nkambe-Misaje part targeted. FCFA 20 billion is budgeted for the project that has enormous opportunities to the communities through which the road will pass as revealed by the North West Regional Delegate of Public Works, Ngwainbi Ayeah. This was during a consultative meeting organized by the UN Women in collaboration with the Non-governmental Organization, Reach out Cameroon on January 19, 2023 at the North West Regional Assembly.  
Speaking during the event in Bamenda, the representative of the UN Women, Estella Kinga stated that their objective was to make available to women living along the road under construction, related socio-economic infrastructure so that they benefit from the impact of the road in terms of improved family income, social resilience and participation in a perspective of sustainable and integral development of the region. On their part, the women leaders and stakeholders expressed their worries ranging from farm-to-market roads, lack of portable water, electricity, processing units, sensitization, funds for start-ups, construction of empowerment centers, equipping the existing ones amongst others. According to the various women leaders, if the concerns raised are looked upon, it will go a long way to improve on the living conditions of especially the rural women along this stretch of road. It was revealed that the project is designed to benefit women and girls in towns and villages along the road and women socially engage in income-generating activities and their families. Women’s’ associations, cooperatives and fragile groups are targeted.
