Fight Against Leprosy : CERAC Calls For Continuous Efforts

This was during a ceremony to donate gifts to affected persons yesterday January 29, 2023 in Yaounde.

Persons affected by leprosy have once more felt the unending magnanimity of the First Lady of Cameroon, Chantal Biya through her charitable organisation, the Circle of Friends of Cameroon, known by its French acronym CERAC. As part of activities to mark the 70th World Leprosy Day, the organisation, as it is in its tradition, was at the former leprosarium of the Jamot Hospital in Yaounde yesterday January 29, 2023 to donate to victims of the disease as well as encourage them to remain hopeful. The donation ceremony brought together several actors committed to the fight against the disease. During the event, the Head of the CERAC Delegation, Owona Oumou, who is the Deputy General Coordinator of CERAC in charge of the Diplomatic Wing, revealed to the plethora of affected persons who thronged the venue that as promised last year, CERAC is back with more gifts to show the affection of the First Lady towards vulnerable persons.
She later on appreciated the work covered in fighting the disease but underlined that with more collective efforts much more could be attained. While revealing that current statistics stand at about 200 cases of Leprosy in the country, she stated that this is a drastic decrease and proves that the disease can be eliminated. It is thus against this backdrop that Owona Oumou, while referring to the theme of the Day, “Act now, end leprosy”, stated that, “We must continue to act. We must continue to sensitise. We must fight the barriers that prevent affected people from accessing care to break the chain of transmission”.
