Media Controversy On Martinez Zogo’s Assassination : Government Condemns Sensational Reporting

Below is a statement by the Minister of Communication.


“For some time now, some actors in the media world, obviously in search of sensation and notoriety, have felt they had to use the assassination of Mr Zogo Martinez, Station Manager of “Amplitude FM” urban radio and anchor of the programme known as «Embouteillages", as a pretext to put a State and a regime on trial through excessive and even insulting remarks. They even go as far as making clumsy and ill-considered prophecies about the future of Cameroon.
This is particularly the case of the non-governmental organization known as Reporters Sans Frontières and several so-called whistleblowers and, above all, the French newspaper Le Monde, which, in its editorial of 11 February 2023, made untimely assertions, erroneous analyses and fanciful speculations, without any correlation with the reality in Cameroon. 
To say that Cameroon is like a monarchy, with a justice system at the mercy of orders, where violence, secrecy, clanism and predation prevail, and where journalism is a dangerous profession, is not only an untruth, but also a gruesome and thinly veiled instrumentalisation that, to say the least, discredits this renowned newspaper, which is bound to be exemplary in terms of journalistic rules of ethics deontology and professionalism. 
Therefore, the Government of the Republic intends to reaffirm the following:
•    Cameroon is a rule of law where fundamental freedoms, including the freedom of press, are guaranteed and constitute the foundation of our democracy. This is evidenced by the significant number of political parties, the multitude of associations, NGOs and press organs exercising freely, in accordance with laws and regulations in force in our country;
•    Regarding the administration of justice, it is by no means at the mercy of orders, and ensures the fullness of its prerogatives, in strict compliance with the principle of separation of powers, and in full independence;
•    Cameroon is not a monarchy, but a republic endowed with democratic institutions functioning normally; the President of the Republic, His Excellency Paul Biya, is therefore neither a monarch nor an autocrat, and owes both his presence and his maintenance at the helm of the state, ...
