National Men’s Basketball Team : Imperative Reinvigoration

The performance of the national men’s basketball team during the past few years leaves much to be desired. The team is struggling to survive given their recent performance in major international competitions. A good example is the performance of the senior men’s basketball team during the second round of the 2023 FIBA World Cup qualifiers that took place in Alexandria, Egypt, last month. After recording two wins against the Democratic Republic of Congo and Egypt, the Lions lost their third game against Senegal 63-89. 
At the end of the second round qualifiers for the World Cup, Cameroon finished on the sixth spot with four victories and eight defeats. Cameroon barely qualified for the second round. This is not the first time Cameroon has been eliminated from the prestigious World Cup in recent years. During the 2019 FIBA World Cup qualifiers, Cameroon was eliminated by Côte d’Ivoire during their last game. Cameroon has failed to qualify for the upcoming 2023 FIBA World Cup that will take place from August 25 to September 10, 2023 in Japan, Indonesia and the Philippines. From their recent performance, the Lions will not only miss playing the World Cup but will also the Olympic Games as the World Cup is also qualifiers for the Olympic Games. By implication, the national men’s basketball team will be absent in the international scene in 2024.
