MTN Elite One : Canon Goes Up, Bamboutos Steady

The football outfits occupy the top positions in Groups A and B respectively after day 17 matches played over the weekend.

The battle for supremacy in the ongoing MTN Elite One Championship is getting tougher as clubs continue to seek to better their positions on the standings. After day 17 matches played over the weekend, Canon Sportif of Yaounde took advantage of the exemption of former leaders, UMS, to top Group A with 28 points. They took the lead after overpowering Renaissance of Ngoumou 2-0 on Sunday March 19, 2023. With this win, Canon are unbeaten in their last five matches. Exempted UMS sits second with 27 points while Colombe are third after being held in 1-1 draw by Eding Sports of Lekie. The gods of football smiled on PWD of Bameda in the top match of the day against Aigle of Menoua. The Bamenda-based club returned to winning ways after two straight defeats as they beat their day 17 opponents 1-0.  But this win could not take them out of the relegation zone as they remain 10th with 16 points. The heaviest win in this group is Djiko’s 4-0 victory over Stade Renard in an advanced day 17 game played on March 15, 2023. Coton Sport that was attending to continental duties over the weekend, is expected to continue catching up the calendar as they play Djiko FC today March 21, 2023 in a delayed day 15 encounter. They had earlier succumbed to Avion 1-0 in their advanced day 17 game on Saturday March 11, 2023.
