Weightlifting : Cameroon’s Promising Package

Even though considered as a difficult exercise, this sports discipline remains one of the medal hopes for the country in international competitions.


Weightlifting is a sport in which athletes compete in lifting a barbell loaded with weight plates from the ground to overhead, with each athlete trying to successfully lift the heaviest weights. Athletes compete in two specific ways of lifting the barbell overhead: these are the snatch and the clean and jerk. Each weightlifter gets three attempts at both the snatch and the clean and jerk, with the snatch attempts being done first. 
Weightlifting is a discipline that has always made the country proud in the international scene. It is the sport with the most medals in Cameroon. For two decades, Cameroonian athletes have never come back home empty handed in major international competitions. Even though training conditions may be difficult, there is always the commitment and determination to win on the part of the athletes. It is this winning spirit that remains the crucible of Cameroonian weightlifting. Weightlifting has an Olympic bronze medal obtained by NZESSO Madias who finished fourth at the 2012 Olympic Games in London thanks to the positive test of the third competitor. The bronze medal is yet to be celebrated in Cameroon. 
At the level of the clubs, training takes place at least six times per week in order to enable the athletes keep their form. This discipline has won at least 14 gold medals in the Commonwealth Games in 20 years. The 2023 season kicked off in Yaounde on Saturday February 18, 2023.
