Modernizing China : Beijing Shares Vision, Promises Dividends

The China Public Diplomacy Association and the Chinese People’s Institute of Foreign Affairs on April 21, 2023 organized the Lanting Forum on Chinese Modernization and the World. The one-day event, which held in the Meet-the-World Lounge in Shanghai, was supported by the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government.

Close To 80 Countries Represented 
The gathering was attended by representatives of governments, think tanks and international media. And political dignitaries and former political dignitaries from nearly 80 countries, international experts and scholars, business leaders, foreign diplomatic envoys and representatives of international organizations.

Xi’s Promises For Global Development 
State Councilor and Chinese Foreign Minister, Qin Gang, read out a congratulatory message from Chinese President Xi Jinping at the opening ceremony. The President said China was building a strong country and advancing national rejuvenation on all fronts through its path to modernization. “China will provide new opportunities for global development with new accomplishments in Chinese modernization, lend new impetus to humanity’s search for paths toward modernization and better social systems, and work with all countries to advance the building of a community with a shared future for mankind,” Xi stated.

China’s Own Development Path
The President recalled that realizing modernization was China’s relentless pursuit since modern times. Adding that it is also the common aspiration of people of all countries. “In pursuing modernization, a country needs to follow certain general patterns. More importantly, it should proceed from its own realities and develop its own features. After a long and arduous quest, the Communist Party of China has led the entire Chinese nation in finding a development path that suits China’s conditions,” the Chinese Leader stated. 

After A Long Quest 
In a keynote address, Foreign Minister Qin Gang said Chinese modernization was deeply rooted in its history, practices and philosophies. “Chinese modernization is the natural choice of China's 100-year-long quest for development, promoting national rejuvenation on all fronts, and the outcome of the laws governing human development. Under the able leadership of the Communist Party of China, China has found by itself a path to modernization, and created a new form of human advancement,” he said. 

No “One-Size-Fits-All” Model! 
“Modernization is a common cause of all humanity,” Qin emphasized. Saying, “There is no fixed model of, or single solution to, modernization. Any country can achieve modernization, as long as the path suits its conditions and answers the need of its people for development.” As the biggest developing country, China always keeps in mind the greater good of the whole world. The Chinese path is a path toward development of China, through which more positive energy will be added to global peace and new opportunities created for global development, Qin stressed. 

“Don’t Toy With Taiwan!”
On the situation in Taiwan, Qin Gang emphasized that the island has been an inalienable part of China's territory since ancient times, and both sides of the Strait belong to one and the same China. “This is Taiwan's history, and it is also the status quo of Taiwan. Taiwan's return to China is a component of the post-war international order. China will not lose any part of its territory that has been restored. And the established post-war international order will not be upended. China will never back down in the face of any act that undermines its sovereignty and security. Those who play with fire on Taiwan will eventually get themselves burned,” Qin warned.

Boost To Global Economic Recovery 
Back to the modernization of China, the Foreign Minister said the country’s huge population will be a stronger boost for global economic recovery, opening up a broader path to the common development of all countries, and helping inspire confidence in many countries in their pursuit of modernization.
