World Blood Donor Day : Promoting Blood Donation Via Sports

The day will be commemorated tomorrow worldwide to honour those who donate their blood and encourage others to do same.

Prelude to the world Blood Donor Day, commemorated tomorrow June 14th, 2023, a sport walk took place over the weekend through which the population of Yaounde and its environ were sensitised on the importance of donating their blood to save life. The sport walk, organised by the National Blood Transfusion Centre in Cameroon, took place on the theme “Give blood, give plasma, share life, share often.” 
On Saturday June 10, 2023 under the leadership of the Director General of the National Blood Transfusion Centre, Professor Dora Mbanya, a group of Cameroonians walked from the Ministry of Public Health passing through the centre town to the Bastos Junction and back to the Ministry of Public Health with a message which underlines the role every single person can play, by giving the valuable gift of blood or plasma. In the over two-hours sport walk, those participating joyfully highlighted the importance of giving blood or plasma regularly to create a safe and sustainable supply of blood and blood products that can be always available, in all hospitals in the country, so that all patients in need can receive timely treatment.
According to Prof Dora Mbanya, the walk was part of activities to commemorate the World Blood Donor Day in honour of blood donors and also to reach out to the entire community to know that there is a national blood transfusion service which collect and promote blood donation. She said the walk was also a kind of campaign to sensitise the population to donate their blood. “Many people do not see the need to donate their blood.
