Preserving Archives : Importance In Nation Building Highlighted

A two-day capacity building workshop holding at the Ministry of External Relations concluded on June 9, 2023 on the role archives play in the socio-economic development of a State.

Within the framework of the International Archives Week, officials at the Ministry of External Relations, especially those in the department of communication, document and diplomatic archives are updating their skills on the conservation of archives, documents which contain facts and are crucial to the development of a country. The two-day seminar which began on June 8, 2023 and concluded on June 9, 2023 under the theme, “The diplomatic archives of Cameroon united for effective diplomacy,” was presided at by the Secretary General, Chinmoun Oumarou on behalf of Minister Mbella Mbella. The two-day workshop seeks at raising awareness on the important role archives play in the management of any institution, and ensuring the radiance of Cameroon’s diplomacy through quality management information and storage within any institution. In addition, the Head of State on January 30, 2023 appointed some officials to Cameroon’s diplomatic and consular posts out of the country, and the seminar targets upgrading their skills in information management for national progress. 
It is against this backdrop that the Secretary General of the Ministry of External Relations while presiding at the opening of deliberations noted that the preservation of archives contributes in constituting the rich patrimony of Cameroon. Stating the fact that they add value to a situation, the Minister Plenipotentiary cited the Bakassi Pennisular dispute which was efficiently handled thanks to the preservation of archives.
