Dr Laura Besong Obsequies: To Whom Honour Is Deservedly Due

The Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Cattle, Meat and Fish Resources, CEBEVIRHA in the Central African Economic and Monetary Community, CEMAC, was laid to rest in Yaounde on Saturday June 17, 2023.

Her 54 years on planet Earth seemed to have positively impacted majority of those she ran into, worked or interacted with. This is why to her biological family, she was a “pearl” and “rare gem” gone too soon. Most of those who knew her gave a similar positive scorecard of Dr Laura Matabong Egbe Besong, a Veterinary Doctor who graduated from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria in 1997. Understandably, her alma mater and colleagues were in her Petit Marche, Odza, Yaounde residence on Saturday, June 17, 2023 to bid adieu to her. Alongside thousands of other mourners from cameroon and the sub-region.
Conspicuously present at the interment was the representative of the Head of State, His Excellency President Paul Biya. Alamine Ousmane Mey, the Minister for Economy, Planning and Regional Development, later decorated the glittering milk-white casket bearing the remains of Dr Laura Besong with the Medal of the Knight of the National Order of Valour, posthumously. On behalf of the Head of State for the devoted services she rendered to the State, and the Central African Sub-region.
Prior to her death in South Africa on April 11, 2023, Br Laura was the Executive Secretary of the Ndjamena, Chad-based Economic Commission for Cattle, Meat and Fish Resources, CEBEVIRHA in the Central African Economic and Monetary Community, CEMAC zone. A position she was appointed to by CEMAC leaders during their summit meeting in Yaounde on March 17, 2023. Dr Laura was also Technical Adviser No. 1 in the Ministry of Livestock, Fisheries and Animal Industries. Thus, the presence of Dr Taiga, the Minister of Livestock, Fisheries and Animal Industries, and Mrs. Ntsama Etoundi Malaika, the CEMAC Representative to Cameroon. And many other international and national dignitaries.
In an emotion-laden voice, Mr. Manu Jaji, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Livestock, Fisheries and Animal Industries, read Dr Besong’s biography, paying glowing tribute to her selflessness. The husband, Dr Samuel Besong, s...
