2023 Women’s World Cup : Competition Rumbles Off Today

The 32-team tournament with four African sides involved begins this July 20, 2023 with the opening match between New Zealand and Norway at Eden Park, Auckland.

As from today July 20, 2023, the world will be animated by yet another football jamboree which is the 2023 Women’s World Cup. Teams will be converging on Australia and New Zealand looking to win the biggest prize in women's football. It will be the first FIFA Women's World Cup to have more than one host nation. In addition, this tournament will be the first to feature the expanded format of 32 teams from the previous 24.
With the expanded version, Africa fields four teams in the tournament. Reigning continental champions, South Africa will be joined by Nigeria, who boast nine African titles, and World Cup debutants Morocco and Zambia at the month-long tournament which ends on 20 August, 2023. They all qualified for the global showpiece after reaching the semifinals of the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. Cameroon is not part of the global event after failing to make use of their last chance in the Intercontinental Playoffs in New Zealand.
Africa’s best performance in the World Cup was in 1999 when Nigeria reached the quarterfinals and breaking this record will be the objective of the African teams. The Super Falcons who are still looking for their first World Cup glory are in Group B alongside Canada, co-hosts Australia and newcomers Republic of Ireland.
