Reconstruction of NW/SW : Noticeable Evolution

Several schools, health centres and bridges have been constructed with vital documents rehabilitated for the wellbeing of the population.

In order to facilitate the return to normalcy in the North West and South West Regions of the country, it was proposed at the Major National Dialogue that a vast programme for the recovery, reconstruction and development of the two regions be formulated. To match words with action, the Presidential Plan for the Reconstruction and Development of the North West and South West Regions (PPRD-NW/SW) was instituted with the National Coordinator and other frontline actors appointed and commissioned. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) was equally designated as partner and has since then been working in collaboration with government for the realisation of projects. Placed under the supervision of the Prime Minister, the Plan focuses on three priority areas which include; restoring social cohesion, reconstruction and rehabilitating basic infrastructure, and revitalizing the local economy.
Most recent statistics presented after the visit of the Chairperson of the Steering Committee of the Plan, Confiance Ebune Balungeli to the two regions some months back, reveal sustainable progress. As concerns promoting social cohesion, over 800 documents have been reconstituted, 60 peace influencers trained, 12 socio-cultural events organised and five multipurpose centres constructed and equipped, amongst other achievements. On the rehabilitation of essential infrastructure, 19 water points have been constructed, 30 schools and 20 health centres rehabilitated with several community centres constructed. With regards to revitalising the local economy, 2,400 farmers and fishermen have been provided agricultural materials, 50 cooperatives assisted, more than five community credit unions rehabilitated, 120 entrepreneurs provided with start-up kits, and several trainings organised on the reconstruction of greenhouses.
