Female In Electoral Processes : Advocacy For Greater Representation Intensifies

A three-day seminar that held in Yaounde on August 3-5, 2023 concluded with the elaboration of an action plan that will see more women participating in political activities.

Women have a numerical strength but unfortunately are not adequately represented in the electoral process and other political activities in the country. With a steady evolution however noticed over the years, stakeholders are still of the opinion that female representation needs to be improved in the decision making process. It is within this context that a three-day workshop on the validation and adoption of statistics on the taking into consideration of women in the decision making process is being held at the Yaounde Mont Febe Hotel. Organised by UN WOMEN and the African Development Bank with the technical support of Elections Cameroon, and attended by representatives of political parties, legislators and civil society organisations, the seminar is expected to end with the elaboration of a roadmap to step up the inclusion and participation of women in political activities in the country. Participants will thus identify setbacks to female participation in elections and propose counter mechanisms.
Presiding at the opening of reflections on August 3, 2023, the Inspector General No 1 at the Ministry of Women Empowerment and the Family, Benjamin Yene, on behalf of the Minister said, the issue of female representation in the decision making process occupies a significant preoccupation at the international scene. In Cameroon, he noted that progress is being made to increase gender equality through the ratification of several international legal instruments.
