Major National Dialogue Resolutions : Progress Made In Implementation

A compendium of government actions highlights progress made in some institutional reforms and reconstructing the economy.

Cameroon’s Major National Dialogue was held from September 30 to October 4, 2019 at the end of which several recommendations were made for the structural transformation of the economy through reconstruction and ensuring a return to lasting peace in crisis-affected regions. To that effect, a follow-up committee for the implementation of the resolutions of the Major National Dialogue was setup, with the Prime, Head of Government, Joseph Dion Ngute at the helm. For practical purposes, evaluation meetings are rotationally held in Yaounde, Buea and Bamenda. This is to enable committee members better analyse the actual state of affairs in the implementation process. It is against this backdrop that the Prime Minister is again in Buea, South West Region to chair the fifth session of the follow-up committee. A compendium of government actions since the dialogue reveal a steady progress made in the implementation process. Some actions have been completed, others ongoing and some in permanent activity. 
For institutional changes, especially with regards to accelerating the decentralisation process, some completed actions include, the promulgation of the law to institute the General Code of Regional and Local Authorities, election and setting up of Regional Assemblies and Special Status in the North West and South West Regions, appointment and installation of Public Independent Conciliators, creation of the National School of Local Administration and appointment of officials, drafting of enabling decrees for the transfer of powers to Regions and the adoption of budgets of Regional Councils. The Presidential Plan for the Reconstruction and Development of the North West and South West Regions was also instituted and the plan is making great strides in revamping the economy, constructing destroyed infrastructure and reinstituting lost documents.
