African Charter On Human, People’s Rights : Cameroon Deposits Two Protocols

The country’s Permanent Representative to the African Union, Churchill Ewumbue Monono handed the two legal instruments on September 8, 2023.

Cameroon, through its Permanent Representative to the African Union, Ambassador to Ethiopia, Churchill Ewumbue Monono, has deposited the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights on the Rights of Older People in Africa, adopted in Addis Ababa on January 2016, and the Protocol on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Africa, adopted on January 2018. The two legal instruments were tabled on September 8, 2023 in Addis Ababa during a ceremony chaired by the Commissioner for Health, Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development of the African Union Commission, Minata Samaté Cessouma, on behalf of the Chairperson.  
With regards to the Protocol on the Rights of Older    Persons, the Cameroonian Parliament validated its ratification in December 2021 which was done by the President of the Republic, Paul Biya. On the other hand, the Protocol on Persons with Disabilities was equally ratified by Cameroon in December 2021. On June 6, 2023, President Paul Biya further signed the instruments of full powers for the Permanent Representative to deposit the documents at the African Union. Cameroon is therefore the tenth country to ratify the Protocol on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Africa and 12th nation to ratify the Protocol on the Rights of Older Persons in Africa.
