Practice of Bilingualism : Commission Evaluates Implementation In SW

Members expressed satisfaction with the use of the two official languages in some institutions visited in the region on Tuesday September 26, 2023.

A team from the National Commission for the Promotion of Bilingualism and Multiculturalism (NCPBM) made up of Barrister Ntumfor Nico Halle and David Abouem A Tchoyi, in the company of Mosima Anne Enanga, Regional Head of NCPBM South West Region, have evaluated the effective implementation of bilingualism in four State institutions. On Tuesday September 26, 2023, they visited the Buea Regional Hospital and Limbe Regional Hospital. The following day, it was the turn of the Police Training College Mutengene and the National School for Penitentiary Administration in Buea. In all these institutions, the Commissioners noted that indicative directions and sign posts are in the two official languages. Some of their documents too were noted to be in English and French languages. 
Ntumfor Nico Halle said their mission also included the fight against hate speech and xenophobia which have taken the entire nation hostage. He was unhappy with Cameroonians who chastised their fellow compatriots for belonging or not belonging to a particular locality. “It is obscene language which is unaccepted for any elite to want to exclude others living in any given place. The Constitution of the nation has said you and me can live anywhere. An elite should be each other’s keeper, morally build, loving, patriotic and God-fearing,” he said.
