“We Need To Make Necessary Investments”

Roger Dassi, Basketball Trainer.

Cameroonian men’s clubs have gradually been quenched out of the African scene, what are some the reasons that account for this?
It is true that Cameroonian clubs are currently not doing well on the continent especially looking at the back-to-back non-qualification of FAP for the Basketball Africa League. One of the reasons for this backward performance is inadequate finances. We need to scout for the best local talents and blend them with some very good recruitments from abroad. All these are linked to money. Good players are costly. If you look at the Al Ahly Benghazi, FUS Rabat and Bangui Sporting that qualified for BAL in the West Division this season, they recruited some of the best players. They have made the necessary investment and the results are felt on the field. Most local players even rush abroad because clubs don’t have the means to keep them back home. Again, our local league is not professional enough. It is not very competitive despite the numerous efforts of the federation. Also, there is no real strategy for youth basketball development. I think there a lot of changes at the level of administration and the technical bench. There is a lot of instability at that level and it is felt on the squad. If they get more stable administratively they can do wonders. FAP was competing with teams that prepared well and made top notch recruitments. FAP made recruitments but I think they were not up to standard. All boils down to finances and stakeholders have to invest to get the results. We equally realized that team-chemistry was not good. FAP has to create a platform of how to look for better combinatio...
