Decentralisation : National Assembly Appeals Greater Power Devolution

House Speaker, Cavaye Yeguie Djibril also touched on aspects of hate speech, harmonious living together and the access to basic commodities as end-of-year approaches.

The Speaker of the National Assembly, Cavaye Yeguie Djibril, while chairing the opening plenary of the November session of Parliament of the House on November 10, 2023, has called for the enhancement of the decentralisation process. Acknowledging strides already made in the sector, the House Speaker said the National Assembly would equally like to see the local taxation policy translated into reality with celerity. “It is also necessary to devolve power to regional and local authorities with the requisite resources that regional and municipal authorities can easily have access to in order to fully and effectively play their role,” he stated.
From the people’s rostrum, the House Speaker strongly condemned hate speech and fervently appealed for harmonious living together. Hon. Cavaye Yeguie Djibril also reiterated that Cameroon is a State where there is the rule of law and separation of conventional powers, through three main arms of government; the executive, legislature and judiciary. “These three conventional powers work harmoniously under the very enlightened leadership of the President of the Republic, Head of State and Head of national institutions. None has the right to jeopardise institutional harmony.  Each institution should concentrate on what falls within its ambit,” the House Speaker stated. 
With regards to trade, the legislator said they hope to see Cameroon export more to foreign countries and keep abreast developments. “Pertaining to the import substitution policy, the National Assembly would like to have action to reduce the cost of living in Cameroon become a top priority.
