School Christmas Feasts : Gov’t Forbids Use Of Obscene Songs

It is that time of the year when Christmas feasts and other cultural activities are organised worldwide to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ as well as the end of another year. In this light, pupils in nursery and primary schools have always joined the Christmas jamboree through the organisation of Christmas tree feasts and other cultural activities. Such events are usually graced with musical presentations by pupils. The vulgarity in some of the songs has left many people appalled. The Minister of Basic Education, Laurent Serge Etoundi Ngoa has taken a measure to reinforce and put an end to such an unwholesome practice amongst children.
Recently, the Minister of Basic Education addressed a circular letter to Regional Delegates of Basic Education concerning the monitoring of cultural activities in educational establishments. In the note, Professor Laurent Serge Etoundi Ngoa observed, decried and prohibited the recrudescence use of obscene music in nursery and primary schools, during festive ceremonies (Christmas feasts, cultural activities). He reiterated and made reference to the circular letter n°003/B/1464/MINEDUB/SG/DSSAPPS of May 4, 2016, which had formally prohibited the broadcast of obscene music in nursery and primary schools as well as
literacy and non-formal basic education centres. “I would like to remind you that the said music conveys messages that are contrary to the values promoted by education in Cameroon, and contributes to tarnishing the image of Cameroonian schools and, by extension, of our country," the Minister of Basic Education further reminded his collaborators.
