Indomitable Lions : Finding The Dream Team

Coach Rigobert Song had to make major changes in all three matches of the group stage in quest for an appropriate group that can produce positive results.

Coach Song’s relentless pursuit for a perfect eleven saw Cameroon experiment different formations, and players throughout the group stage. While the results were mixed, some glimpses of promise emerged, particularly in the final match against Gambia. Song's tactical prowess and the players' adaptability will be put to the ultimate test at the knockout stages, where finding the dream team becomes a priority, not just a dream.
Goalkeeping
First came Fabrice Ondoa, whose fairly steady hands secured a 1-1 draw against Guinea in the opening match. Then, first-choice André Onana; who had arrived camp on the eve of the opening match, made his debut against Senegal. It yielded three goals conceded; a porous result. Song was evidently disturbed. In the crucial clash with Gambia, he turned to Ondoa once more, not for his saves, but probably for his fighting spirit and his unyielding desire to see Cameroon emerge victorious.
Defense
Coach Rigobert Song has been an architect of change in his desire to mold Cameroon's backline. The journey began with a sturdy four-man wall against Guinea, Yongwa, Moukoudi, Wooh, and once more forcing Castelletto to play right back. Yet, against Senegal, the blueprint shifted. Wooh and Castelletto became the central pillars, Tolo patrolled the left flank, and Tchato guarded the right with Moukoudi being dropped. Three goals conceded, however, forced a tactical rethink. Knowing victory against Gambia was paramount, Song went for an offensive gamble with a three-man defense. Still, the core remained; Tolo, Wooh, and Castelletto on the backline while, Yongwa and Tchato were pushed a little ahead to boost the offensiveness of the team.
Midfield
Song is conducting a symphony in the Cameroon midfield, searching for the perfect blend of rhythm and control. Zambo Anguissa remained constant in all three matches. In the opening match, Ntcham and Kemen accompanied him, but the melody did not flow. Ntcham was dropped in the second game against Senegal for Neyou. Yet, the harmony remained elusive. Ntcham was again re-injected as starter in the last game against Gambia to accompany Zambo Anguissa. Neyou and Kemen were kept on the bench.
