AFCON 2025 : Preliminary Round Draw Today

The stage which includes the eight lowest ranked teams on the continent is expected to hold during the FIFA Window of 18-26 March 2024.


The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations concluded on February 11, 2024 with Côte d’Ivoire being crowed champions and all eyes are now set on the next edition of the competition to be held in Morocco in 2025. The build-up to the qualifiers of this event enters full gear today February 20, 2024 with the draw of the preliminary round. The draw takes place in Cairo, Egypt, as from 1 p.m., Cameroon time. This is according to an information made public yesterday February 19, 2024 on the official website of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
The primary round includes the eight (8) lowest-ranked teams according to the FIFA ranking: Somalia, Djibouti, Sao Tome, Chad, Mauritius, South Sudan, Liberia and Eswatini. The matches will be played on home and away basis during the FIFA Window of 18-26 March 2024. The four (4) preliminary round winners will join the 44 exempted teams for the group stage.
Going by the draw procedure of the primary round, the least eight ranked teams are distributed into two pots according to their ranking: Pot 1 is made up of Somalia, Djibouti, Sao Tome and Chad. Pot 2 includes Mauritius, South Sudan, Liberia & Eswatini.
