Impacts of Artificial Intelligence : New Jobs Will Emerge…

Day two of the summit on Artificial Intelligence focused on the demolition or creation of skills in the era of the new technology.

In a keynote address to participants yesterday March 5, 2024 at the three-day summit on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Yaounde, the Professor of Management Science, Department of Mathematics and Industrial Engineering, Polytechnique Montreal, Québec, Canada, Nathalie De Marcellis Warin revealed that AI and machines will increase labour productivity by automating routine tasks while expanding employee skills and increasing the value of work. As a result, in a machine-for-machine employment model, low-skilled and routine tasks will disappear, while new and currently unrealised jobs roles will emerge. 
In a ten minutes address, Prof Nathalie De Marcellis Warin indicated that AI could lead to the loss of tens of millions of jobs, displacement or the very nature of jobs shifting. “That which is sure is that automation and technology have shifted work in pursuit of lowering costs, increasing efficiency and production”, she noted. Adding that computers, intelligent machines and robots seem like the workforce of the future. And as more and more jobs are replaced by technology, people will have less work to do and ultimately some task will disappear. This seems a scary proposition in the sense that what will people do if all the work is done by AI or robots? The Professor of Management Science however, reiterated that although AI has its own shortcomings especially as it will transform, devalue certain professions while creating complex ethical issues, particularly related to liability, the technology, no doubt  is coming with a lot of opportunities amongst which increased productivity and innovation, reorientation of workers towards ...
