Women Apt For Planet 50-50

They marched through the 20th May Avenue in Yaounde with messages that informed the public of the need to bridge gender inequalities at work places.

Scores of women from all walks of life have brandished messages that buttress the theme of this year’s International Women’s Day; “Women in a changing world of work: planet 50-50 by 2030”. In front of the First Lady of Cameroon, Mrs Chantal Biya and a host of other national and international dignitaries, women marched-past the 20th May Avenue, yesterday March 8, 2017, with messages that revealed the fact that there is need to invest in women’s economic empowerment as the surest way towards gender equality (planet 50-50) and the eradication of poverty. They also carried messages which hailed President Paul Biya for instituting the National Gender Policy which is a guarantee for gender equality.
The march-past, which is the apex that depicts the symbolic nature of Women’s Day celebration in Cameroon, was an opportunity for women to explain to the world through short messages the stakes and challenges surrounding the theme of the celebration.  That is why through a banner, the women called on everybody to lift obstacles in achieving planet 50-50 by 2030. As such, a message in the first train of women that marched-past read; “for a 50-50 Cameroon, Let’s uplift obstacles to women’s access to decision making and stand together for a 50-50 gender parity by 2030”.
Through banners, women from one of the National Oil and Gas Companies recognised the fact that with equal qualification, they have same grades and pay as male workers. However, the women at the Ministry of Finance reiterated through a message that there was need for women to “Stand up” and develop their competence for gender equality by 2030.
