Paul Biya - Sergio Mattarella: Convergent Views On Subjects Discussed

Day one of the State Visit of President Paul Biya to Italy unravelled concerted efforts by both countries to add value and depth to existing relations.

Yesterday, 20 March, 2017 was a defining moment in Cameroon-Italian relations. In less than twenty four hours, President Paul Biya was chief celebrant in six different ceremonies spanning across five principal symbols of the Italian realm of power. From the Presidential Palace for the welcome ceremonies, through the City Council for the tribute to the grave of the Unknown Soldier, President Paul Biya later met the President of the Council of Ministers, Senate and National Assembly Presidents before heading back to the Presidency for the State Dinner. It needed the political stamina, weight and vision of Cameroon diplomacy to pull out such a feat in one of the oldest European democracies.

Chigi Palace, another main centre of power that hosts the office of the President of the Council of Ministers, rolled out military honours for President Paul Biya before official talks. At the National Assembly, House Speaker Laura Boldrini spared nothing to ensure the visiting dignitary gets the best in Italian hospitality. The personalities and the institutions in day one of the State visit yesterday did not only emit symbols of republican values, they were a screaming barometer reading of the quality and depth of relations between Cameroon and Italy.
