Iron ore Mining: Booster In Ocean Division

PM Dion Ngute, representing the Head of State inaugurated the Bipindi-Grand Zambi iron ore mining project and laid the foundation stone for the Sinosteel mineral terminal on September 22, 2025

Recognizing the mining sector's potential to drive national development, President Paul Biya has shown a strong commitment to its growth. In his December 2024 end-of-year address, he once more expressed optimism about Cameroon’s mining future and pledged support for key projects. This government commitment materialized clearly with two major events that took place yesterday september 22, 2025 in the South Region’s Ocean Division. On behalf of the President, Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute officially inaugurated the Bipindi Grand Zambi iron ore industrial mining project, operated by G-Stones Resources S.A., and then laid the foundation stone for SINOSTEEL CAM S.A.’s mineral terminal at the Kribi port. These milestones are set to significantly elevate iron ore mining in the region. The Prime Minister praised ongoing efforts and urged stakeholders to maintain their momentum, announcing that Cameroon has now joined the ranks of global iron ore producers. The rains that poured during both events were considered as showers of blessings wishing well to the projects.

The huge potentials of Bipindi, Grand Zambi

Since obtaining the first exploration license in 2010 the Bipindi, Grand Zambi iron ore project has progressed through feasibility studies in 2017, the signing of a mining agreement in 2019, an official public utility declaration in 2020, environmental and social impact assessments, a mining license acquisition in 2022, and the commencement of mining activities in 2023.

The open-pit mine contains an estimated 1.2 billion tons of iron ore reserves, with a highly concentrated 147 million tons identified within a 3 km section of the 47 km deposit. Initial production capacity is 1 million tons annually for the first production line, with plans to increase output to 6 million tons by 2027 through additional production lines. The company aims to ship approximately 60,000 metric tons to China via Kribi port by October 2025. The president of GStones, Mr. Bougne, highlighted ongoing efforts to add value by transforming the iron ore locally. It is in this light that on the industrial front, the company plans to set up two steel complexes in Fifinda and in the industrial port area, which will enable 100% iron billets to be obtained from iron concentrate, with a total production capacity of one million tons of iron billets per year, directly usable by all steelworks.
