Former Indomitable Lions Captain, Rigobert Song Bahanag, who was undergoing treatment in France for the past six months returned to the country on Saturday April 1, 2017.
It was a mammoth crowd that thronged the Nsimalen International Airport to welcome the former Indomitable Lion and national team coach for the Intermediate Lions of Cameroon. Many fans, relatives and well-wishers went to the airport to make sure the news about the arrival of the former Lion was not April fool.
The public filled the International arrival lodge of the airport and even the entrance to wait for the football legend. Security officers were equally at work to restore peace and order as the people waited anxiously for their idol. “We have been waiting at the airport for hours. The flight was at 6:00 p.m. We know he has already arrived. We cannot leave without seeing Rigo,” said one fan. At the arrival hall Song Bahanag greeted the crowd as appreciation for their love and concern for him. Some could not recognize the ex-Lion because of the absence of his usual dreadlocks and some even asked if he was really the one. “He has changed!” said some fans. Some were lucky to have a hand shake with the former captain of the Indomitable Lions while many shouted “Courage Rigo!” as he was led to his car by overzealous aids. He told reporters that he will continue with his normal activities such as his job as the coach of the intermediate Lions.
The ex-Cameroon international took ill in October 1, 2016. The 40-year-old collapsed at his home in Yaounde and was immediately transported to the Yaounde Emergency Centre after suffering from a brain aneurysm and was in a critical state. After emerging from coma Rigobert Song was flown to France for treatment at the Hôpital de la Pitié Salpêtrière in Paris.
