“Integrate The Elderly Into Society’s Functional Framework”

Djawa Walidjo Alain, Sociologist.

How do societal attitudes impact the way people treat elderly people?
The attitude of society towards ageing significantly influence how people treat the elderly. According to Bourdieu, everything is a social construct, and Giddens would argue that it is a matter of structuration. The clash between modernity and traditional African and/or religious values has led to a deconstruction of the elderly person's image. Once referred as wise due to their age, experience, and spiritual insight, the elderly has gradually lost this esteemed status. The deconstruction of the elderly person's image and its replacement with negative stereotypes, such as being perceived as “wicked”, “witch-like”, or “a burden to society,” has resulted in the construction of a new narrative. This narrative fosters mistrust and suspicion towards the elderly, leading to differential treatment by others. Therefore, it is unsurprising that this category of individuals faces distinct social attitudes and behaviours.

What are some effective ways to address abuse and neglect of older adults?
Effective solutions require addressing the root of the problem. This involves tackling the issue within society by reconstructing the image of older adults. Society is not overly complex; restoring traditional moral values is of paramount importance in this context. Historically, the relationship between older adults and society was relatively acceptable due to solid moral foundations that viewed the elderly as a “treasure, a blessing, an asset”-values that were genuinely believed in. To reinstate the dignity of older adults amidst moral decline, it is imperative to leverage two key drivers: tradition and religion. By harnessing the power of these influences, we can work towards reinstating respect and care for older adults, ultimately fostering a more compassionate and supportive environment. Hence, placing the elderly at the centre of human affection.
