Polio: Nationwide Sensitisation Campaign Ongoing

A series of activities are currently taking place in all the 10 regions of the country ahead of the World Polio Day on October 24, 2025.

C ameroon will join the global community on October 24 to mark the 37th World Polio Day, on the theme, “Integrating gender considerations into vaccination activities, aligning with the 2030 vision of leaving no one behind.” To kick-off activities marking the day, the Ministry of Public Health yesterday October 20, 2025, launched a nationwide sensitisation campaign aimed at educating the public about the poliovirus and the importance of ensuring every child undertakes vaccination. According to the National Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI), Cameroon is marking another World Polio Day having been declared wild poliovirus-free in 2020 by the Polio Certification Commission. However, it is revealed that despite progress in vaccination efforts, various poliovirus strains continue to circulate in the country and its neighbouring regions. Misinformation and rumours have led to vaccine hesitancy and coverage gaps in certain communities. As a result, this year's International Day to Fight against Polio presents an opportunity for experts to raise awareness, engage with parents, and provide accurate information to encourage vaccination. The theme highlights the critical role of gender in polio vaccination, addressing barriers that hinder progress. EPI experts are determined to engage both men and women in discussions on overcoming socio-cultural obstacles and promoting joint responsibility in vaccination efforts. In anticipation of World Polio Day, a series of webinars and educational workshops are underway across all 10 regions, highlighting the dangers of polio and the importance of vaccination.
