Organic Farming: Gov’t Proposes Regulatory Mechanism

Agriculture and Rural Development Minister, Gabriel Mbairobe, was before the Production and Trade Committee of the Senate on November 18, 2025 to present and defend the legal instrument.

The government of Cameroon is determined on promoting agriculture in the country, so as to meet the growing demands of the national and international market. The objective is always to promote good agricultural practices that yield quality produce. It is against this backdrop that the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Gabriel Mbairobe was before the Production and Trade Committee of the Senate on November 18, 2025 to present and defend the bill to lay down the rules and regulations governing organic farming in Cameroon. He was assisted by the Minister of Livestock, Fisheries and Animal Industries, Dr Taiga.

Explaining the pertinence of the legal instrument to legislators, the Minister said it will enhance the professionalism of stakeholders in the sector, most of whom still operate informally and boost the profitability of Cameroonian products on the global market.

Defining organic farming, the Minister said it refers to a system of crop cultivation, animal production, aquaculture, beekeeping and forestry practices involving the preservation of natural ecosystems, thus significantly reducing the use of synthetic chemical inputs and strictly restricting the use of genetically modified organisms. Thus, the farming systems adopted are environmental-friendly and safeguards consumer health.
