From Plumpy’Nuts To Resilience: The Integrated Approach Tackling Malnutrition In Mayo Danay

Japanese funding has enabled a robust, multi-sectoral response, placing a strong emphasis on the well-being of women and children.
Yagoua, Mayo Danay Division, Cameroon - In the Far North Region of Cameroon, a confluence of conflict, climate crises, and poverty has rendered communities highly vulnerable, with malnutrition posing a persistent and severe threat to children. A critical intervention, funded by the Japanese Government and implemented through the United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF, is providing a vital lifeline. Delivering not just essential supplies, but also the knowledge needed to build long-term resilience.
Emergency Assistance
The project, titled “Response to the urgent needs of refugees, Internally Displaced Persons, returnees, and vulnerable children affected by humanitarian crises,” aims to strengthen vulnerable populations' access to essential services in the Extreme North, North-West, and South West Regions.
Wasole Ferdinand, head of the malnutrition products warehouse in Yagoua, observes the ongoing impact firsthand. "Through UNICEF, we continue to receive help to tackle malnutrition," he stated.
Latest Delivery
The latest delivery - 692 cartons of Plumpy’Nuts, a Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food, (RUTF), alongside essential medication - was swiftly distributed to the Guéré, Vélé, and Yagoua Health Districts. These supplies are crucial for an area where most families, counting only on their own pockets, would be unable to afford the specialized treatment required for severe malnutrition.
More Than Just Food
The intervention recognizes that simply providing supplements is not enough. The initiative adopts a multi-sectoral approach, integrating nutrition with WASH, (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene), health services, and Social Behaviour Change (SBC) actions.
"All what we offer will not suffice in handling malnutrition," Ferdinand explained. To ensure sustainable impact, the programme emphasizes community training. Community members are taught culinary activities, focusing on enriching local foods like potatoes into nutrient-dense pap, and promoting proper hygiene and sanitation practices.
